Are Edenpure Portable Heaters Really Worth it?

Edenpure heaters cost close to $400 and claim to cut your heating bills in half, but the question is – are they really worth it? Do they work and what’s the advantage?

What is the Edenpure heater?
Essentially, Edenpure heaters are energy efficient space heaters, but space heaters that cost $400. The Edenpure system claims its different thanks to its quartz crystals method, but this isn’t necessarily true.
How does the Edenpure heater work? Is this technology really new?
The Edenpure heater advertisements claim the Edenpure uses a new type of technology that makes it a more efficient space heater. However, that’s not exactly true.
The Edenpure uses electricity and powers its internal quartz tubes which, in turn, heat up copper elements in the unit and then, with a fan, send that heat throughout the room.
Unfortunately, that technology is not new or particularly special. In fact, it’s the same technology used in the Sun Twin heaters that were sold about 25 years ago. The two heaters are even made by the same company, BioTech Research Co.
The only difference between the Edenpure heaters and the Sun Twin units is that the Sun Twin comes in a wood cabinet instead of a plastic one and costs $50 more.
Can Edenpure units really improve my home’s air quality?
The Edenpure advertisements claim that Edenpure units will produce cleaner air than a furnace because they don’t produce dust.
The problem with this claim is that furnaces don’t produce dust either. Dust comes from hair, skin, clothing, furniture, carpets and little particles tracked in from the outdoors, but it doesn’t come from furnaces.
In fact, because furnaces come equipped with air filters, they can actually clean the air. As a furnace circulates the air in a house, it will capture dust in its filter – particularly if you replace or clean your furnace filters regularly.
How well does the Edenpure work?
Consumer Reports recently published a study on home space heaters and the Edenpure came up with the second-lowest score.
The Edenpure scored a 24 out of 100 on the Consumer Reports study. According to the magazine, the temperature controls were not up to par and the unit was hard to use.
Consumer Reports also told customers to be wary of the company’s claim that the heaters could reduce heating bills by 50 percent. According to the magazine, homeowners would need to lower their thermostat by 17 degrees to achieve those kinds of savings.
Can the Edenpure save me any money?
If you’re turning down your thermostat because you’re using Edenpure heaters, then yes, they will save you money. However, you need to ask yourself if those savings are worth the $400 price tag or if you could achieve similar savings with a space heater that costs between $50 and $100 instead.
