Electric Space Heaters:

A Guide to Electric and Portable Space Heaters

Electric space heaters are a great way to save money on your heating bill and start “zoning.” Zoning is the energy-efficient art of only heating or cooling the space you’re using.

By using electric energy efficient space heaters, you can turn down your thermostat by about 5-7 degrees and see significant savings.

Money Saving Benefits of Electric Space Heaters

Using a small and portable space heater can reduce your monthly utility bills, because it lets you set your thermostat lower. Lowering your thermostat about 5-7 degrees will save you 10 to 20 percent on your monthly utilities and should make up for the cost of the heater.

Popular Styles and Types of Electric Heaters

If you’re concerned about keeping your feet warm, try a model like Heat Rest which is specifically designed for feet. This model lies flat to the floor and gives off a low, radiant heat. It even has a built-in massaging mechanism.

If you’re worried about drying out this winter, try a combination heater-humidifier.  These combo units produce approximately one gallon of moisture every day and redistribute it through the room. The humidity can make you feel warmer and more comfortable.

If you’re looking for electric space heaters designed specifically for child safety, try the Patton. It’s a football-shaped heater that plugs right into the wall outlet, without a cord. The Patton has a child-safe front and even serves double-duty as a night light.

Choosing an Electric Heater

The best electric space heaters have electronic or digital controls, however they’re also more expensive. Ideally though, you want a heater that has some form of thermostatic control beyond “hot and hotter” and has multiple heat settings (typically 600, 900 and 1500 watts).

Because all electric space heaters are fully efficient, meaning all the electricity they consume is converted into usable heat, no one space heater is more efficient than the other. This is why you should focus on safety, convenience and comfort when choosing an electric portable heater.

Safety Considerations

For safety purposes, you want a heater that has an automatic shut-off, particularly if the heater is ever accidentally tipped over. You also want a heater that lets you touch the outside of the heater without getting burned.

For added comfort, look for a heater that’s appropriately sized to the size of space you want to heat. For example, if you just need to heat the space around your office chair, you don’t need a massive, air blasting, noisy furnace. A small, radiant heater should do the trick.

When considering the convenience score of electric space heaters, evaluate how much space it will take up and if it’s portable enough to move around? Do you want to be able to move the heater or would you like something more stationary and permanent? Does it have the controls you want and is it easy to operate?
