Basically, the company offers up free plans to users and then charges the product vendors, like solar panel manufacturers, a fee to be featured in the plans. Which is why they can list hundreds of usable home plans and all for free.
However, the company’s custom plans are their bread and butter, but the site is great if you’re looking for plan ideas that are free and green. In addition, the website is hosting a contest giving away a full custom home design, worth close to $25,000.
Local Architectural Services
Before you commission a local architecture firm to create custom green home plans for you, make sure they’re familiar with LEED standards and the idea that a lot more than the building materials go into making a home green.
When you commission custom plans, try to think about sunlight exposure, insulating properties and energy efficiency. Even the basic frame and structure of a house can change its LEED rating.

Deltec also does custom green home plans which include full architectural and building services.
Sun Plans
Sun Plans is a company that provides green home plans focused on harvesting solar energy. All their plans are focused on capturing as much sunlight as possible and really using passive solar energy.
The plans on their site are for sale and typically cost about $80 for a set of 11x17 prints of the plans.
COOL House Plans
Their site may be rudimentary, but COOL House plans has one of the Internet’s biggest directories of house plans that you can quickly download or order prints from.
They’ve also launched a COOL green site which features green building materials and green home plans that are environmentally friendly. However, the selection of plans on this portion of the site is severely limited.
