Holmes humidifiers help keep appropriate humidity levels in your home. "Why would I want my home to be humid?" you may ask yourself. Well, in many cases you don't. Dehumidifiers A lot of homes actually have the opposite problem: there is too much humidity. The solution for that problem is a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier does the exact opposite of Holmes humidifiers, and removes moisture from the air, reducing dampness and stopping the progress of problems like mold and mildew. But sometimes you really do need to raise the humidity level in a house. During winter when heat is running all day and night, a lot of people suffer from dry noses, lips and skin. People who suffer from allergies and asthma can also benefit from a humidifier. And anybody who has ever had a cold knows that a humidifier can be very handy to have around the house. Cool Mist Humidifiers Cool mist humidifiers use either a rotating disk, a metal diaphragm or a fan to vaporize water and blow air through a filter. They work very well, and produce lots of moisture. Tap water has a lot of minerals in it, and using tap water in a cool mist humidifier can mean that you are going to make those minerals airborne as they are dispersed through the humidifier. Using distilled water prevents this. Or you can buy filters to use with cool mist humidifiers, but there is really no proof that they work. Warm Mist Humidifiers Unlike cool mist humidifiers, warm mist humidifiers heat the water to create steam. A lot of people use warm mist humidifiers if they experience dry skin, throats or noses due to colds or allergies. The benefit that warm mist humidifiers have over cool mist humidifiers is that the heat prevents minerals and other microorganisms from being dispersed with the steam. Unfortunately, this means that they are a little more expensive to run since they require more energy. How to Pick a Humidifier Holmes humidifiers come in a variety of styles. There are smaller, more inconspicuous 1 gallon humidifiers that help humidify and clean the air of a large room, and there are larger 10 gallon home systems that will work for your entire house. Obviously the price point changes as the humidifier becomes larger, but ultimately it's worth it to pay more if you are having house-wide problems with your air.
