Most low voltage lighting fixtures use the same standard bulb technology as traditional bulbs, so the energy savings aren't that significant - unless you're using a CFC (compact-fluorescent) bulb. To learn more about low voltage lights, their advantages and how they work, keep reading.

How to Lower Costs

The best way to lower your lighting cost, if you're using low voltage lighting, is to reduce the amount of time your lights are on by turning them off when you're not using the rooms or outdoor space. Despite the lower voltage, most low voltage systems will not save you a significant amount of money on your electricity bill.

Advantages

The primary benefits of installing low voltage lights instead of standard bulbs is fixture wattage is less, how easy they are to install, their lesser size and the great range of styles they come in. If you are not especially experienced doing electrical work, the installation of 115-volt wiring (lighting standard) will be a dangerous challenge.

How Low Voltage Lights Work

Lighting fixtures that operate on less voltage use on just 12 volts of electrical discharge. This low voltage is safe and won't shock you - even if you hit or touched the bare wires. Because of this, the wire will run over or just under the ground with little risk - making low voltage lighting a great choice for outdoors.

Most cheaper low voltage kits for lighting and packs use fixtures that are plastic. Higher-quality and more durable brands of  lights are made of metal. The more expensive brands and styles also tend to be more decorative, including many models that come etched or even made from stained glass.

Installing Own Low Voltage Lighting System

If you prefer to install your own lighting system, start by comparing various kinds of wiring connectors. The first type is a two-part style - which simply slide over each wire and snap shut over it. This is likely the easiest type to install.

The other option are fiber-optic lighting systems - these use a projector box that has a 115-volt bulb. Fiber- optic cables carry small amounts of light to each individual, small lighting fixture, so electricity doesn't have to run to each one.

Find Low Voltage Lights

Some good companies offering quality low voltage lighting fixtures are Argee Corp (http://argeecorp.com), Nightscaping (http://nightscaping.com) and RSL Lighting (http://rsllighting.com).
