Portable Room Air Conditioners:

Benefits and Drawbacks of Portable, Room-Sized Air Conditioners

Portable room air conditioners can be a great way to install air conditioning cheaply and save money on your monthly power bills. However, they can also be loud and less powerful.

To learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of using room-sized air conditioners, keep reading.

Benefits of Using Portable Room Air Conditioners

Energy Savings

Because a portable room air conditioner is only working and using enough energy to cool one room or small area, it uses significantly less power than a full-sized air conditioner.

Homeowners can also target the areas they want to cool instead of trying to cool their entire home when they’re maybe only enjoying the living room or bedroom at that time.

Lower Bills

Because you’re saving energy with portable room air conditioners, you’re also saving money. Basically, that energy savings will translate into lower monthly power bills.

Dehumidifier

Most portable room air conditioners also double as dehumidifiers. They’re built in to the unit, offering a 2-for-1 solution.

Personal Temperature Control

A home that’s cooled with multiple portable air conditioners lets each room control their temperature. For example, a full-home air conditioning unit requires that one temperature be set on the thermostat for the entire house. However, with a portable air conditioner, each room can control their own thermostat.

Price of Installation

A portable air conditioner is significantly cheaper to install than a full-sized, home air conditioning unit – you just have to take it home and wheel it to the room where you’d like to use it.

On the other hand, installing air conditioning in an older home can be very expensive and time-consuming, particularly if the duct work doesn’t exist to support it.

Drawbacks of Using Portable Air Conditioners

Noise

The biggest drawback to using portable room air conditioners is the noise level. Portable conditioners bring the air conditioning motor right into the room (instead of outside the house as is the case with full-sized air conditioners).

If you’re sensitive to noise or want to use your air conditioner in a room where you’ll be watching television, you may want to try the unit out before you buy it.

Limited Power

Portable air conditioners are not nearly as powerful as a full-sized air conditioner. They can drop a room’s temperature, but typically can’t cover an area larger than a few hundred feet.

Depending on the brand and price range, most room-sized air conditioners will only cool an area between 150 and 350 square feet. So, yes, they’re ideal for room-sized spaces, but buyers shouldn’t expect them to cool an entire home.

Lower Quality

Portable room air conditioners are designed to be portable and transient. Unlike a full-sized air conditioner which is designed to sit outside a home and last for potentially decades, the room-sized air conditioner should only be expected to last for about 10 years.
