Replacement Window Screens:

Buying Replacement Window Solar Screens to Save Energy

Replacement window screens can be expensive, but you should also look at them as a way of potentially saving you money in the long run. How? Because solar shade window screens can dramatically reduce your monthly air conditioning bill.

Why Solar Replacement Window Screens are Cheaper than Air Conditioning

Before air conditioning became a fairly standard building amenity, shade trees were often used to offset the heat buildup experienced in buildings exposed to the sun's rays.

Air conditioning effectively combats passive solar heat gain, but less costly remedies are available - like solar screens.

Let’s say you live in a climate with harsh winters and mild summers, and yet areas around your windows are always uncomfortably warm even during the winter months.

It doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, as long as the sun is shining, a building with south-facing windows will experience that kind of significant heat gain on a clear day.

That’s where solar replacement window screens come in. They actually block out part of the sunlight and therefore reduce that heat gain.

Solar Screens Over Other Alternative Cooling Methods

There are several alternative cooling methods that are used outside of solar screens, including window film. But window film is sometimes unsightly and often starts to peel, scratch and eventually flake off. Solar screens, however, are easy to repair, can be taken off and on and, most importantly, are extremely effective.

The other advantage of solar replacement window screens is cost. Unlike expensive alternative fuel systems or cooling strategies that utilize radiant barriers or living roofs, solar screens can go in quickly and easily.

The Power of Replacement Solar Screening

In hotter climates, solar screening will not eliminate the need for air conditioning, but it can reduce cooling costs. Basically, if you live in Arizona, you’ll still need your air conditioner, but you may not need to run it for as long.

Considerations When Purchasing Replacement Window Solar Screening

Although a variety of variables are involved, including glass thickness, sun angle and screen color, solar screening blocks approximately 70 percent to 85 percent of the sun's heating rays.

The most popular brands of solar replacement window screens are those made from SunTex solar screening fabric, manufactured by Phifer Wire Products Inc. SunTex is made from vinyl-coated polyester rather than fiberglass so it lasts longer than conventional solar screening.

When solar replacement window screens are made, the screens are woven and then heat-sealed for stability. Once applied, they should block up to 80 percent of the sun's rays before they penetrate the glass, reducing interior heat and glare, especially near the windows.
