Replacement Window Systems:

A Guide to Replacement Vinyl Window Systems

Custom Search

Replacement window systems typically come in 5 different categories - double hung, sliding, casement or awning, bay or bow, and specialty windows.

Most replacement systems are made from vinyl windows designed to go in quickly and easily while meeting modern energy efficiency standards.

To learn more about the different replacement window systems available, keep reading.

Double Hung Replacement Windows

Double hung replacement window systems are the most popular as they tend to be the most energy efficient and the easiest to clean. The common tilt-in sash allows homeowners to easily access both sides of the window from the interior of the house for easy and fast cleaning.

The grids or Muntin patterns are usually placed within the thermal pane glass so that they never have to be cleaned.

The added appeal of double hung systems is that homeowners can choose a different colored vinyl framing for the outside than what appears on the inside, allowing them to match both the exterior and the interior.

Sliding Replacement Windows

Sliding style replacement window systems are typically found on most modern or contemporary homes. The sash usually runs in a vertical line and the windows slide up and down. However, horizontal sliding models are also available.

Good quality sliding replacement window systems will include high-end metal tandem rollers which allow the windows to open easily without the need to push or pull. And because most replacement windows are vinyl, the frame doesn’t expand and contract in the winter.

Casement or Awning Windows

Casement windows are a great architectural feature, particularly in awkward corner spaces that need light, but simply don’t have the wall real estate to support large windows. They’re versatile, offer great sight lines and typically cover a lot of wall without taking up a lot of space.

Bay and Bow Windows

Bay replacement window systems are great for that breakfast nook in the kitchen or the reading corner in the guest bedroom. The style is distinctive and offers a lot of viewing area along with a great exterior design element.

When purchasing a bay or bow window system, make sure that the seat area is properly insulated to prevent heat loss. Because bay windows stick out from the house, they’re notorious for being energy suckers. Also, avoid placing a bay or bow window over a heating register.

Specialty Windows

Specialty window systems are typically custom-designed windows for either difficult spaces or custom window work like above-the-door crescent windows or circular windows. They’re also typically used when homeowners want to incorporate stained glass into a window.

Because most custom-designed replacement window systems have to be specially-made, they’re often handcrafted. This can drive up the price significantly. Expect to pay between 200 and 300% more for a non-standard sized window.
