Residential solar panels are starting to gain a major toehold in the suburban United States.
It may seem like an irony that the universe of big-screen televisions, SUVs, freezers in the garage and two fridges is going solar - but it's happening. And if it can gain acceptance in middle America, then solar technology is on the brink of widespread popularity.
The Popularity of Solar
Motivated by environmental awareness and convinced by dropping solar-cell prices along with hefty financial incentives, at least 1,800,000 US and 2,780,000 Japanese homeowners, along with hundreds of thousands more in Europe and Canada, installed solar energy systems between 2000 and 2008.
The fastest-growing group of solar power owners are residents who are also connected to power grids,meaning they can depend on the power grid in case of solar power failure and they can sell power back to the grid.
The Cost of Solar
Though solar is still expensive solar costs have fallen by almost 90 percent since the 1970's. As the price of residential solar panels decreases, demand increases and many homeowners recognize that the initial, up front cost of solar could be worth it in the long term.
Many states are providing incentives for homeowners to install solar panels- without giving up big TVs or their pool heaters.
Many states have passed "net metering" laws that require utility companies to connect residential solar panels back into the grid - and to pay homeowners for their energy output. Basically homeowners only pay for what they take from the grid - and are compensated for what they put back.
High Power Needs and Solar
Basically, by creating their own solar power - but still staying hooked in to the grid - homeowners can have solar power while still utilizing the grid for their high-energy needs. They can reduce their use of commercial power, but still run power-hungry appliances.
In addition, many states offer subsidies and grants to support renewable energy programs, meaning homeowners can access funds or major tax benefits to install residential solar panels.
