Solar Landscape Lighting:

A Guide to Solar Lighting for Landscape Purposes

Solar landscape lighting is quickly becoming the hottest trend in lawns and outdoor decorating. They’re easy to install, energy-efficient and capable of emitting enough light to be both effective and attractive.

To learn more about the various types of systems available and where you can find them, keep reading.

Remote Systems

Remote solar landscape lighting systems work by using a remote panel to collect sunlight and then passing that electricity through to the individual lamps and lighting units.

The system is more effective and efficient because the solar panel can be placed in a high-sunlight area (like a rooftop) while the individual lamps can be in a shaded or low-light area.

However, a remote solar landscape lighting system also means that you’ll need to run wires from the collection panel to the individual lights. These wires are typically run under the ground, so it’s a significantly more labor-intensive install than a direct solar system.

Direct Solar Systems

Direct solar landscape lighting systems basically refer to wireless lighting systems where each lamp collects its own solar power to use and doesn’t share with other lamps.

These solar lighting systems are easy to install, but they’re often less powerful than systems that rely on a remote solar panel. These systems are also less effective in shaded or low-light areas.

Floating Systems

Floating solar lighting systems are designed for use in pools, ponds, fountains or other home waterways. Like a floating votive candle, they simply float on the water’s surface and emit a small splash of LED light.

Solar floating lights are powered by solar energy and typically cost between $10 and $15 per unit.

Plastic vs Metal

Many discount retailers sell solar landscaping systems that include, say, 8 lights. These lights are made from plastic and designed to be driven into the ground like a stake.

Meanwhile, these plastic LED solar lighting systems are unable to withstand severe temperature changes, excess snow or the wear and tear of ongoing outdoor use.

They are, essentially, a temporary solution that’s designed for one to two seasons of use. They’re easy to install, but they’re not made for the long term.

On the other hand, metal solar landscape lights offer a more permanent solution, but they’re typically harder to install. These lights are either wired to a remote solar panel, wired to one another or permanently installed.

With a permanent install, the lamps are either bolted to the house or deck or embedded in the ground for long-term, all-season use. These outdoor solar lamps are made for year-round use.

That said, permanent and metal solar landscape lighting systems are also more expensive. You’ll typically find them for sale at large home and hardware retailers, high end garden centers or through your local landscaping company.
