Solar Patio Lights:

A Guide to Solar Outdoor and Patio Lights

Solar patio lights are a great way to use a free resource (the sun) in a way that’s safe, reliable and economical.

To learn more about solar outdoor lighting, its benefits and how to purchase and install it, keep reading.

How Solar Patio Lighting Works

Solar products have come a long way from the pocket calculators, battery chargers and gimmicks of the eighties. Today's solar-powered products are highly reliable, easy to use and effective for many applications.

Not too long ago, solar-powered patio lights burned for a short while and then dimmed dramatically. Today's lights can go all night at full brightness.

The process is simple. Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. These cells are combined into panels and arrays to form as much power as is needed for the job.

For products used when the sun isn't shining, batteries are charged during the day to store the power for nighttime use.

Benefits of Solar Patio Lights

People who use these products emphasize how they can set up lights outdoors for a party, and then just move the lights to the other side of the yard to illuminate a pool area. They like the fact that they can keep their yards lighted all night without using a lot of electricity.

Purchasing Solar Outdoor Lights

Stop by your local home supply store and look at the different solar products on the shelves today. Lighted house numbers. Patio lights. Walk lights. Vent fans.

You’ll be surprised to find that most are priced competitively with conventional fixtures that need wiring, junction boxes and more involved installation.

If you're interested in buying solar lighting systems, I suggest that you look carefully at two conditions of operation – the amount of sunlight needed and the storage capacity.

The first condition is the amount of sunlight that is needed to keep the solar patio lights’ batteries fully charged. Though most systems receive some charging even on cloudy days, you will want to locate them in areas of bright sunshine when possible to maximize their effectiveness.

Second, be sure to check out the storage capacity, which indicates the number of cloudy days the light will be lit without a successive charge of sunlight. If you only need some accent lighting occasionally, that calls for one type of system.

But if you want a walkway to have lighting every night for safety or security, then you'll want more storage capacity to ensure its performance.

You can also tell the brightness of solar power lights by the number of lumens they give off, much as the rating of a standard light bulb tells this rating. Read the package carefully to be sure that you select the proper unit for your needs.
