Windowless Air Conditioners:

How to Buy a Windowless Portable Air Conditioners

Windowless air conditioners can be expensive, ranging in price from about $300 to $800, and hard to compare thanks to complex model numbers and numerous brands.

So, before you buy one, read on for a list of criteria you should look out for and tips that will help you get the best value for your money.

Noise Levels

Before you buy any windowless air conditioners, you should ask to try them out in the store so that you can gauge the noise levels. Cheaper models tend to be much noisier and this can be a major headache if you’ve got your air conditioner in your bedroom while you’re trying to sleep or the living room while you’re watching television.

Listen up for high-pitched noises too. Some cheaper models have air conditioning coils that will actually vibrate and begin to hum. What starts out as barely noticeable hum will soon become a mind-splitting high-pitched shriek.

Remote vs Panel Control

Ideally, you want to buy windowless air conditioners that come with a remote control – especially if you’re installing them higher up on the wall.

That said, you also want a model that has a user control panel on the actual unit. In case you lose the remote, you’ll be thankful that you can control the unit manually while you wait for a new remote to arrive in the mail.

Air Conditioner Power

The power of windowless air conditioners is measured in the amount of square feet that they can keep cool. For example, a small portable air conditioner may only be able to cool an area of 150 square feet, which is fine for a medium-sized bedroom.

On the other hand, a larger and more powerful unit could cover a space of about 300 to 350 square feet, which is perfect for an open plan kitchen or larger living room.

Brand Warranty

When purchasing a windowless air conditioner, look for a brand with recognition and a solid warranty. For example, Honeywell guarantees their room air conditioners for two years, they’ll even send someone out to your house if there’s a problem.

You can also try purchasing from a retailer that offers a solid guarantee. For example, Sears will guarantee or warranty their products for at least a year, including parts and maintenance.

Alternatively, if you find a great deal that you can’t pass up, you could always purchase an extended warranty. They’re available from most retailers or independent warranty sellers.

Customer Reviews

It’s unfortunate, but price isn’t always a good indicator of quality when it comes to windowless air conditioners. To really find out if a product is good, check the customer reviews at sites like Customer Search (http://customersearch.com) or Amazon (http://amazon.com).
